HTC Vive Buyer’s Guide (March 2017)

HTC Vive
View on Amazon

Well first of all it looks pretty big and futuristic, but having tested it out, two screens with high resolution are pretty good. HTC Vive comes with two remote controls, headset itself, mini sound headset which is pretty useless better use some SteelSeries Artic 5 series headsets or Sennheiser PC 363D with the HTC Vive for better sound experience and audio isolation. The package also contains two base stations for wall mounting or with a light stand and a link box. First of all the setup is pretty easy, but there are many wires so it took like 30 minutes or so to get all wired up.
When everything is connected the first thing is to setup the room space, minimum for movements is 2mx1.5m or with standing place which i use. Secondly you need to download Steam and SteamVR, Steam has many free games listed, we recommend The Lab.

Pros Cons
Excellent head tracking High price
Easy to setup
Good resolution
Many games

SteamVR and Steam
SteamVR Setup

For setup you need to download SteamVR with Steam. Setting up the room space is pretty is easy, just following few steps and its good to go. Steam has many games listed already and the list is growing pretty fast.

HTC Vive games

Game list is pretty big for now, but some of the best games tested so far are Arizona Sunshine, War Thunder, The Lab Longbow mini game is pretty awsome and exhausting.
For all the games you can checkout this pretty big list from Steam: Link

Screen quality

Screen resolution is good 1080×1200 with 90Hz per eye but there are often some blurry textes and hard to reach cornes without blurring the screen. But when the game is rolling you really don’t notice them anymore. There are some tricks for better crisp resolution, but these updates need more graphic power, our test setup has 1060GTX which runs every game very well without noticing any problems at all.

Remote controls

HTC Vive remote control

Vive comes with two remote controls, more like big sticks but theyr tracking capabilites are very good and fast, there is no delay noticing in the headset when looking these two controls, you can see them in the headsets they often come up as weapons or when in the menu with the same image as they look. These controls have three buttons and a big touch button.

Base stations

Two base stations for tracking HTC Vive base stationare really easy to setup, just power up make sure they can see each other or use special cable to get them synced with each other.

HTC Vive Requirements

Rendering games in high resolution and with good quality is hard for a pc. We recommend atleast i5 processor and 16GB ram with minimum 1060GTX graphic card.

Example gaming setup for VR gaming.

Processor: Intel Core i5 6600K
Graphic card: MSI GAMING GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
Memory: Kingston Technology HyperX 16GB DDR4
Motherboard: Asus ATX DDR Intel LGA 1151
